Fremantle and Brisbane meet at the MCG on Saturday 26 September, the Dockers chasing their first premiership and the Lions going for three in a row. Whether you're watching every kick or steering well clear of it, Melbourne's band rooms have a full program on. Here are six gigs for Grand Final day: one that screens the match, and five that pick up once the siren has gone.

1. FATALE FEST – Penalty, Funkytown Fish, G-String Nicotine & red40painclub

Fatale Fest puts four female-fronted bands on one bill at The Last Chance, set up by its organisers as a response to how few women and queer musicians get stage time. Penalty, Funkytown Fish, G-String Nicotine and red40painclub cover ground from punk and rock to alternative and indie, with tickets a little over $13.

2. Fraternizing with Fish + Jib + Dead Silver

Nighthawks, Collingwood · Sat 26 September, 8:15pm · Tickets

Melbourne five-piece Fraternizing with Fish pull influences from as far apart as Archspire and Split Enz into an intimate indie-alternative sound, with a debut EP due this spring. Naarm folk artist Jib, who works bossa nova into his songs, and Macedon Ranges rock five-piece Dead Silver, raised on Spiderbait, Powderfinger and AC/DC, round out a night of young local bands.

3. Alt-Country Takeover – Freya Josephine Hollick + Stenn Francis-Deare

Smith St Hotel, Collingwood · Sat 26 September, 7pm · Tickets

Smith St Hotel's band room goes country for the night, with Freya Josephine Hollick's cosmic country and Stenn Francis-Deare's alt-folk up first. The Basement Japes close it out with songs from Bob Dylan's Basement Tapes.

4. In The Burrow #3 – Grand Final Day at The Tote

The Tote Hotel, Collingwood · Sat 26 September, 2pm · Tickets

The pick for anyone who wants the footy and the bands. The Tote's third Grand Final Day party screens the match in the beer garden, with A.C. Saunders playing the half-time break and a BBQ going all afternoon, while W.O.M.B.A.T launch a new six-track album in the band room alongside Bad Bangs and Salmon Sisters. Tickets can be bundled with the W.O.M.B.A.T vinyl.

5. Disgraceland – 2 x Sets

Northcote Social Club, Northcote · Sat 26 September, 8pm · Tickets

Disgraceland take songs everyone knows and run them through a punk filter, and they're playing two full sets at Northcote Social Club (9:30pm and 10:30pm). They've shared stages with Rose Tattoo and Baby Animals, and are touring new material of their own. A good fit for a crowd that's been singing since the first bounce.

6. Phil Coyne & The Wayward Aces – White Knuckle Time Album Launch

Shotkickers, Thornbury · Sat 26 September, 8pm · Tickets

Melbourne blues band Phil Coyne & The Wayward Aces launch White Knuckle Time, their first record since growing from a trio to a four-piece, produced by Paulie Bignell at Hailstone Studio. It's harmonica-led Australian blues; TK Reeve and Benny Gerrard (8:30pm) and the Liam Kealy Trio (9:30pm) open, with the Aces on at 10:30pm.
