Tinpan Orange talk about the old world charm of Memo Music Hall ahead of their single launch

Tinpan Orange are about to launch their new single Cities Of Gold at St Kilda's Memo Music Hall. A beautiful, quirky yet haunting pop song with an equally quirky videoclip. Fans of Regina Spektor and The Waifs would love Tinpan Orange.

We caught up with Jesse Lubitz to let us know what’s in store for their upcoming show and why they chose the Memo for their show.

How important is the space when choosing where to perform gigs or launch shows?

The space is so important! The room really sets the tone for us as the band and for punters – particularly for launch shows where we want the audience to feel as though they are entering a world.

What was special about Memo Music Hall for you to choose it for your single launch?

Memo Music Hall is such a grand and beautiful space. We’ve been looking for a reason to play a show there since it re-opened a while back.

Have you played there before? What was your impression of the space?

We’ve never played at Memo before, but I’ve seen plenty of shows there – I saw JAZZ PARTY performing there a while ago and it was a great show. There’s an old world charm but the sound is top notch in the room.

How are you going to take advantage of the space for this upcoming show?

We’ll be dressing the room up and we’ll all be wearing our Sunday best – come and see!!

What other venues do you love playing at and please give us a memory from that venue to highlight why you love playing there.

We are very lucky to have so many amazing venues in Melbourne and around Australia. It seems that when one band room closes, another one springs up offering a new experience to punters and bands. My favourite new(ish) venue that we’ve recently played in The Workers Club Geelong. The band room is great and the venue is run by a team who are committed to making sure that punters and bands have a great night.

Any venues you would love to play at in the future in Melbourne Specifically?

We are so lucky to live in a city with so many AMAZING venues. I’d love to play at Howler one of these days. I’ve heard only great things!

Tell us about your support act, Gabriella Cohen. Why did you choose her for this show?

Gabriella Cohen is an amazingly talented singer / songwriter. She is making some great waves at the moment and we were stoked that she came on board to play this show with us. There’s a rawness to her music that is edgy and delicate. She’s amazing.

Tinpan Orange play Memo Music Hall in St Kilda Saturday August 13.
